CAFE STAFF/BARISTA (CAFE STAFF - PART TIME)

Job Description:
At Borealis, every person wears many hats. We operate with a small team, where each staff member is expected to perform multiple tasks. While some people may be better suited for one task than another, each person is expected to contribute equally to any duties that may be required.
The Cafe Staff/Barista is responsible for serving all products with friendly, individualized attention towards each customer. They are also responsible for educating customers about our coffees and menu offerings. The Cafe Staff/Barista will fulfill any other duties the Manager, Assistant Manager, or Shift Lead assigns and will represent Borealis Coffee in a professional manner.
Our cafes are open 7 days a week, with the busiest days being weekends. Our Riverside location is open 6 am to 3 pm with opening shifts starting as early as 5 am. Closing shifts generally run 30 minutes to one hour after close. Bristol is open 7 am – 3 pm, or until 9 pm Thursday – Saturday.
Shifts are generally 6 – 8 hours, unless staff availability or business needs dictate something different. Some shifts may be as long as 8 hours plus a 30-minute unpaid break, depending on staff availability, business needs, or position. Full-time is considered 30 hours per week and is given priority when scheduling for the week.
Product Responsibilities:
- Ensures that all customers are educated on our products and services.
- Maintains the highest quality, consistent product standards.
- Follow all company drinks recipes and procedures.
- Takes initiative to taste and learn about each new coffee and menu offering so they can clearly communicate the differences in each coffee, make informed suggestions to customers, and have a general understanding of our products.
- Fulfill orders to our high-quality standards as necessary or as asked by supervisors.
Service Responsibilities :
- Sells and serves products to customers in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Participates effectively and efficiently in all sales promotions.
- Safely handles all hot and cold drinks during drink preparation.
- Verbally receives customer orders and calls them back in a friendly manner.
- Reports all customer complaints to the manager on duty.
- Responds proactively to prevent customer service situations.
- Accurately rings sales orders into the cash register and counts back change to customers in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Answers the telephone in a courteous and friendly manner, including, but not limited to, giving a store greeting, providing directions to the store location, or answering other questions.
- Answers customer questions regarding coffee blends, preparation, etc., in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Sells and serves baked goods and miscellaneous food items to customers. Use of a small convection oven is required. Handling of a bread knife and sharp tools is required.
Cafe Responsibilities :
- Restocks shelves, self-serve area, and bar area as necessary throughout the day.
- Bus dirty dishes, empty bus bins, and perform regular spot checks of the dining area.
- Wash and sanitize dishes per company standards.
- Clean bathrooms as necessary and as requested by the shift supervisor
- Maintain a tidy, clean, and safe environment for all guests and staff, in accordance with company standards.
- Organize and tidy tables and chairs, both inside and on the patio, as needed.
- Make house-made syrups, teas, and brew coffee.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks as per company checklists.
Training and Development:
- Perpetuates company philosophy and culture.
- Maintains a high level of motivation to ensure quality and consistent product. An awareness and desire to continue raising the bar on the quality of service, products, and standards are necessary.
- Our training staff and Coffee Educator will train and educate each staff member to the extent of our capacity. We strongly encourage cuppings, asking questions, and learning as much as possible. We want to facilitate professional development as much as we can, but we also acknowledge that we don’t have the resources larger companies do and encourage each person to research and educate themselves as they see fit.
- Borealis is a business member of the Specialty Coffee Association, and employment with us allows you access to an individual membership. We encourage you to use those resources as you see fit.
Qualifications:
- Experience in retail/specialty store or food establishment preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
- Well organized and detail-oriented.
- Self-motivated
- Register and cash handling experience. We use Square for our POS system.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
- Positive attitude and willingness to work in a team environment, and maintains a positive company morale.
Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear. Long periods of standing are part of the job.
- Frequently required to use hand and finger motions, handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.
- Regularly required to lift and/or move items up to 25 pounds.
- Vision requirements: Close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust and focus.
- Regularly required to handle food and hot beverages.

Line Cook / Food Preparation Worker (Kitchen Staff - Full Time)

Job Description:
Borealis Coffee Company is a small-batch, specialty coffee roaster with two cafes in Rhode Island. We believe coffee brings a community together and is an experience worth sharing. Borealis still maintains our business as a coffee shop first and foremost, but we’ve been expanding our menu options over the last few years.
While every staff member wears many hats in our operation, we believe the food program deserves a dedicated, focused team, one that works together to build something sustainable and lasting. Beyond working the line, we also have a handful of seasonal grab-and-go items made throughout the day and part of the line cook’s responsibility.

Service Responsibilities:
- Ensure kitchen is prepared for service, including prepping items that may be needed for the day or coming days per the company’s pars
- Follow all company recipes and procedures
- Receive and organize tickets during service and execute customer orders in a timely manner, while also maintaining quality standards
- Report all customer complaints to the manager on duty
- Perform weekly and monthly cleaning tasks as per the weekly checklist
- Communicate any shortages or low-stock needs to the supervisor
Team Coordination Responsibilities:
- Work and train with the kitchen manager to learn menu items and methods of preparation
- Communicate inventory needs, product needs, and update pars to reduce product waste
Safety & Sanitation Responsibilities:
- Maintain a clean and sanitized work area, including washing dishes as needed
- Follow ServSafe guidelines and maintain a safe work environment
- Maintaining an up-to-date temperature log of all refrigeration units housing food products
- Follow safe cooling or heating and hot-holding standards as required for food safety
- Follow FIFO practices
- Discarding expired product or product that does not meet quality standards and logging it as waste
- Documenting the temperature and quality of potentially hazardous food items upon receiving
Qualifications & Physical Demands:
- 1+ years of experience in food production
- Food Handler certification is a bonus
- Willingness to experiment and implement new ideas
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication, and customer service skills
- Well-organized and detail-oriented
- Self-motivated and able to be self-sufficient in handling a variety of tasks and prioritizing immediate needs
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
- Positive attitude and willingness to work in a team environment, and maintains a positive company morale.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear.
- Frequently required to use hand and finger motions, handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.
- Regularly required to lift and/or move items up to 40 pounds.
- Regularly required to handle hot and frozen items
