Kenya Karindundu Factory: Barichu Farmers Cooperative SocietyBorealis Coffee Company
Just in time for the Holiday season, this is one of the face melter coffees we are excited to offer in limited supply. This Kenya coffee has booming acidity and huge body. We push it a little darker than our normal roasts but that helps make this a great cold weather coffee you can really appreciate. Great complexity and a richness with a flavor profile that offers up baking spices followed by tropical fruit, grapefruit acidity, and hard candy. Cools down to notes of Plum.
This coffee is from 950 small scale farmers in the surrounding Nyeri District in the Southern part of Mt. Kenya. Together, they produce 300 tonnes of cherry per year at the Karindundu factory, which is part of the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society. Their coffee is fully washed and fermented with fresh river water from Kirigau springs, and sundried on raised African beds.
Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society is located in Mathira East Sub-County in Nyeri County. It is currently composed of four factories, Karatina, Karindundu, Gaturiri and Gatomboya. It was registered in October 1996 under Cooperative Development and Coffee Board of Kenya. It has 5,800 registered members and produces 3 million - 5 million Kilos of coffee. Barichu works to give the farmers credit facilities for school fees, farm input and other emergencies. Their goal is to help educate farmers on crop husbandry and other agricultural practices important to the coffee. They have a demonstration plot financed by Tropical Management and house a nursery which serves the whole society providing matured seedlings to help reduce drops in production/income for farmers.
