In the Northern region of Burundi, the Kayanza province is home to the second highest number of washing stations in the country. Rather than large coffee estates in Burundi, the country relies heavily on smallholder farmers that centralize around washing stations. There has been a significant increase in stations in the last ten years that, when combined with a stable political landscape, has translated to one major focal point of coffee production: quality.
Burundi has gained popularity in recent years as quality has increased. This fully washed lot from the smallholder producers of Shikankoni Hill have been working with Cafex, a project launched by Belgian-Burundian couple that wanted to combine the coffee production of their ancestral lands with sustainable development and a desire to improve the lives of the local population.
